For the second year running, Siemens Logistics and Airport Solutions has triumphed at the prestigious 2013 Airport Operators Association (AOA) Awards winning Best Service Provider and reaching the final of the Best Innovator category. The award was presented this month at the annual AOA conference and exhibition, dinner and awards ceremony in London.

Siemens has announced that its intake of UK apprentices has increased year on year. The overall number of apprentices at Siemens exceeds 400.

Opening the gates for a behind-the-scenes look at a Siemens train depot in Southampton raised £2,640 for those suffering with motor neurone disease – thanks to the generosity of over 1,700 local residents and enthusiasts who attended the 10 year celebration event on 12 October.

Global power demand is set to increase on average by nearly 3 percent per year over the current and next decade. Cumulatively, this moderate growth will cause overall power demand to rise by more than half of its current level between now and 2030. If new power plants are added as foreseeable, associated CO2 emissions are likely to increase by a quarter or 3,500 megatons.

Siemens is today celebrating the official opening of its new hub to support customer projects and onshore wind farm construction in Scotland. Siemens the world leader in offshore wind energy solutions is collaborating with the Newcastle University and offshore specialist ALE in an innovative offshore R&D programme. Focused on ensuring the future energy transmission needs of the offshore wind industry are met effectively, wave tank modeling is part of the wider Offshore Platform Reference Design (AC and HVDC) project which sits within the Wind Innovation Programme managed by Narec, the Blyth-based National Renewable Energy Centre. The project is supported by the Government’s Regional Growth Fund (RGF) initiative.

Siemens has now installed a market-ready version of its new 6 megawatt (MW) gearless wind turbine on the test site of the power utility SSE, the UK’s largest generator of renewable energy. Together with its customer, Siemens plans to carry out final testing at the site before going ahead with series production for the UK market but also for international markets. The turbine of the type SWT-6.0-154 with 154 meter rotor diameter offers cutting edge direct drive technology.

Following its launch at Traffex 2013, Siemens Stratos has made its operational debut in the UK. South Gloucestershire Council is trialling the Stratos journey time application using data from a network of ANPR cameras to monitor the reliability of traffic times on key corridors and provide a baseline for measuring the impact of network strategies and improvements.
