The official search for ‘Apprentice Team of the Year 2014’ has begun. Siemens Subsea based in Ulverston has entered two teams into this nationally recognised competition in the hope of making it to the prestigious finals in June.

The highly regarded Brathay Apprentice Challenge supported by the National Apprentice Service asks teams made up of nine apprentices across the UK to prove their team building, leadership, logistical and communications abilities. The teams have to compete in a series of work-related challenges to develop new skills, to benefit their local communities, as well as to raise the profile of their employers and apprenticeships.

Siemens is a leading apprenticeship employer in the UK with around 400 apprentices on its much sought-after scheme. Siemens Subsea has twenty five apprentices on the scheme in Ulverston and typically takes on around 12 each year. Securing the involvement of these highly motivated employees in the Challenge was an easy task. In fact it was so popular that the business entered two teams this year - each team as keen as the other to win this national accolade.

Shaun Hannaway learning and development advisor at Siemens commented:

“At Siemens Subsea we are very excited to have two teams participating in the Brathay Apprentice Challenge this year. We look forward to seeing the projects and events that the teams will organise over the next few months.

The enthusiasm shown by our apprentices has been overwhelming and I’m sure the local community and schools will benefit greatly from each teams desire to succeed and put something back.”

To qualify for the final of the Brathay Apprentice Challenge all teams must compete in the regional heats between January and March. These heats involve raising awareness in local schools as well as across the industry and region and also taking part in community projects to use their skills in the local area.

Activity will be assessed based on the evidence the teams submit in an electronic portfolio according to the judging criteria.

Finalists for the final challenge will be announced on the 9th of April 2014 at a reception in the House of Commons.
