World-leading tidal energy system achieves 5GWh milestone
SeaGen, the first commercial-scale tidal stream energy system has achieved a new milestone of 5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of tidal power generation since starting operation at Strangford Lough in Northern Ireland. That equals the annual power consumption of 1,500 British households. The Siemens-owned system is one of the largest tidal stream power projects today. -

Minister Attwood climbed aboard SeaGen and met members of the SeaGen project team, who explained how the technology operates and the work that has been carried out locally to develop this pioneering green energy solution. -

UK engineered offshore substation for Gwynt y Môr wind farm brings green power to Wales
Today, the latest milestone for the flagship offshore wind farm, Gwynt y Môr, will be achieved with the departure by sea of the UK engineered and built Siemens’ offshore substation. Destined for installation in Liverpool Bay, the 1,500 tonne platform was jointly designed, engineered and fabricated by Siemens in Manchester and UK shipbuilders Harland and Wolff (H&W) in Belfast. This month also saw the commencement of the laying of foundations and subsea cables for the first of the 160 wind turbines, which will make up the 576MW offshore wind farm. When completed the wind farm will generate green energy for almost a third of the total of homes in Wales. -
