Siemens opens the doors of its Northam train depot

Siemens’ world-leading subsea connector manufacturing business Tronic is hosting a major standardisation event at its Subsea Excellence Centre in Cumbria. Representatives from oil and gas operators are attending the ‘Plugfest 2012’ event, organised by Subsea Instrumentation Interface Standardisation (SIIS), from September 10-14.

SeaGen, the first commercial-scale tidal stream energy system has achieved a new milestone of 5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of tidal power generation since starting operation at Strangford Lough in Northern Ireland. That equals the annual power consumption of 1,500 British households. The Siemens-owned system is one of the largest tidal stream power projects today.

Northern Ireland’s Environment Minister, Alex Attwood MLA, today visited, for the first time, the Siemens-owned SeaGen tidal energy turbine at Strangford Lough. Minister Attwood climbed aboard SeaGen and met members of the SeaGen project team, who explained how the technology operates and the work that has been carried out locally to develop this pioneering green energy solution.

Today, the latest milestone for the flagship offshore wind farm, Gwynt y Môr, will be achieved with the departure by sea of the UK engineered and built Siemens’ offshore substation. Destined for installation in Liverpool Bay, the 1,500 tonne platform was jointly designed, engineered and fabricated by Siemens in Manchester and UK shipbuilders Harland and Wolff (H&W) in Belfast. This month also saw the commencement of the laying of foundations and subsea cables for the first of the 160 wind turbines, which will make up the 576MW offshore wind farm. When completed the wind farm will generate green energy for almost a third of the total of homes in Wales.

A major project by Siemens to upgrade over 160 traffic signal controllers across Tyne and Wear is set to go ahead following the award of Better Bus Area (BBA) funding from the Department for Transport to The Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority.

Siemens will take a starring role in the Make it in Great Britain exhibition at the Science Museum, which was opened this morning by Business Secretary Vince Cable and Business Minister Mark Prisk. The exhibition runs from 24 July until 9 September and will demonstrate the very best of British manufacturing.

Siemens has become one of five companies in its sector to retain the coveted Carbon Trust Standard. The award recognises the work Siemens has undertaken to reduce its carbon footprint.

Projects in the United Kingdom to receive 300 of Siemens 6MW direct drive wind turbines

Siemens Industry UK and Morgan Sindall Group plc, a leading UK construction and regeneration group, have today announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, which will see both companies enter a strategic technology and infrastructure partnership.

Siemens has today announced that Tronic, a Siemens subsea business based in Ulverston will create 70 new roles at its Subsea Excellence Centre in Cumbria. This represents the biggest intake of employees and apprentices ever for the business.
