Chippenham-based Siemens Rail Automation has recruited 18 graduates who will now embark on the company’s two-year training programme.

Siemens has appointed rail industry heavyweight Philip (Phil) Heathcote to the position of Sales Director of its Rail Systems business in the UK, effective from 31 August 2015.

Siemens today (September 7) announced the award of a key contract to Hull College Group involving the development of a “best in class” facility to train workers for the company’s new wind turbine blade factory in Hull.

Following the successful completion of the final stage of signalling work by Siemens, Norway’s metro transport infrastructure owner, Sporveien Oslo AS, has now commissioned into full service all four sheds for the new Avløs rail depot for Oslo’s Kolsåsbanen. These commissionings marked the final phase of the 10-year Kolsåsbane project, which has delivered new metro rail infrastructure from the centre of Oslo out to Kolsås station in the city’s western suburbs.

An 80-strong group of rail industry professionals, more used to bogies than bicycles, turned to a different mode of transport for a four-day (from 14 – 17 August) gruelling cycle ride to raise funds for charity. Covering nearly 300 miles, from Germany to the UK, the ride celebrated the successful project partnership that has led to the delivery of the first new Class 700 train set to run on the Thameslink routes.

Glasgow City Council and West Dunbartonshire Council have awarded a joint contract to Siemens to maintain roadside traffic control and information equipment for a period of up to five years, commencing 1 August 2015. The new contract includes the provision of associated ancillary support services, as well as the supply of works and services to support the Councils’ traffic control operation and periodical planned signal and optical maintenance.

From the Highlands to the Scottish Borders, Siemens is installing and maintaining Electric Vehicle (EV) charge points for Scottish businesses. Through the ChargePlace Scotland project, 100% grant funding is available to Scottish based businesses for the installation of EV charge points for workplaces. The aim of this funding is to complement the national network of charge points being installed across Scotland to promote electric vehicle use.

Conquest Hospital, part of the East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, has recently modernised a 22-year-old interventional radiology room with the installation of an Artis zee™ ceiling-mounted angiography system from Siemens Healthcare. The system is being used in the hospital’s trauma centre, which is also being utilised as a back-up cardiac room, helping to increase efficiency and throughput at the hospital.

The UK is now home to the first brand new Siemens-built Class 700 Desiro City train, which is set to transform passenger experience on the Thameslink rail routes when it rolls into action next year.
