Siemens secures order for 20 Desiro UK electric trains
London Midland, First TransPennine Express and Angel Trains Ltd have placed an order worth around EUR 170 million with Siemens plc for 20 new Desiro UK electric trains. The contract includes a maintenance agreement and the electrification of the Siemens depot in Ardwick, Manchester, creating up to 50 jobs. -

Siemens to deliver steam turbine generator for a waste-to-energy plant in Great Britain
Siemens Energy has received an order for a steam turbine generator to be used in a waste-to-energy plant equipped with combined power and heat generation in Plymouth, England. The customer is Imtech Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG, a leading provider of technical building services equipment, based in Planegg near Munich. As the general contractor for the Water-Steam-Cycle, Imtech will construct the plant for the Mannheim-based EfW specialist MVV Umwelt. Once commissioned in 2014, the power plant – with an electrical capacity of up to 25 megawatts (MW) – is designed to cover the heat demand of Plymouth’s Naval Base, cost-effectively and with low CO2 emissions. -

Siemens strengthens its position in ocean power – Acquisition of Marine Current Turbines
Siemens has acquired the majority stake in Marine Current Turbines Ltd., the UK company based in Bristol, which develops and builds tidal power systems. “The acquisition of Marine Current Turbines is an important step forward for the Solar & Hydro Division,” said Ted Scheidegger, CEO of the Solar & Hydro Division of Siemens Energy. “We will continue to drive the commercialization of this promising technology which harvest energy from highly predictable tidal streams. Our target is to secure a leading position in this future business.” As a pioneering company, Marine Current Turbines has become a technology leader in tidal power systems. Back in November 2011, Siemens increased its stake in the company to 45 percent. Siemens is planning to complete the acquisition of Marine Current Turbines in the coming few weeks. Financial details of the deal are not disclosed -

Siemens apprentice wins Leeds award
Siemens apprentice, Adam France, has won the ‘Against All Odds’ award at the inaugural Leeds Apprenticeships Awards. The awards, organized by Leeds City Council in partnership with the National Apprenticeships Service, recognise apprentices across the city, plus employers and ambassadors who have been committed to getting young people into work. Adam, who is one of 5 apprentices at Siemens Mechanical Drives in Leeds, overcame an unsettled start to his apprenticeship, including a switch to a different course, to become a key talent and asset to the business. -
