Siemens has a longstanding global programme of engagement with leading universities and research institutions focused on bringing together the best minds for talent development and innovation. Manchester and Cambridge Universities were the first two UK institutions to be awarded Siemens global Ambassador status. This prestigious status was given in recognition of the wide ranging research collaborations across business sectors and also the efforts of these two universities to engage graduate talent with Siemens. Newcastle, Lincoln and Sheffield were also recognised as principal partner universities by Siemens.
Roland Aurich, chief executive officer, Siemens plc and North West Europe, said:
"We are delighted to celebrate our collaboration with the UK’s top universities at the Crystal, our brand new building - a symbol of leading-edge innovation and sustainability. Siemens has a very long heritage of innovation in the UK, which has helped to make us one of the country’s leading engineering companies. 170 years on we are every bit as committed to our founder’s vision. We look forward to strengthening these university relationships and working together on projects that will keep the UK at the forefront of technology innovation."
Siemens has a long standing association with many of the world's leading universities. Its university partnering programme represents another major part of its commitment to the UK skills agenda. Collaboration ranges from joint research programmes to development of new qualifications to meet future demands, to providing industry placements as an integral part of education programmes.
Toby Peyton-Jones, HR Director for Siemens plc and North West Europe, said:
“At Siemens we know that it is engineers who will shape the future of the world we live in and find solutions for the worlds most pressing problems. Currently there just are not enough of them to meet the demands of not only Siemens but other companies as well. By actively focusing on a number of core universities we believe we can maximise the opportunities for strategic industry-led collaboration. “
Siemens is investing heavily in UK research and graduate recruitment and runs a UK-wide university engagement programme, which includes careers fairs, summer internships, year long placements, graduate schemes, student visits to industry and collaborative project work. By establishing these links with universities Siemens hopes to give valuable opportunities to young people from across the UK, increasing their employability and skill base as well as gaining great input into the ongoing development of Siemens in the UK. Toby Peyton-Jones hopes that, by offering young people these opportunities it will, “press home the message that engineering can be a great career option and by gaining an insight into what it is like to work for a global engineering and technology company they will continue a career in this field and not be so tempted to join the banking sector."
