Siemens engineers in Newcastle to refurbish one of the world’s largest generators ever made

Siemens Energy Service Fossil in Newcastle

Siemens Energy Service Fossil in Newcastle has been selected by Bruce Power, one of Canada’s leading power plant operators, to refurbish one of the world’s largest generators. The generator was originally manufactured at Charles Parsons works in Newcastle upon Tyne in the 1960s. Siemens is in a unique position to offer this support, providing the critical link between the past and present in generator service and maintenance capability. Siemens still runs its service business from the same site providing services for the global Parsons turbine fleet and power generation services worldwide. Siemens also manages its wind turbine service business from the Newcastle site, a development which reflects the changing nature of the energy landscape in the UK.

The 16 metre long 865MW generator which weighs approximately160 tonnes arrived on Thursday, 21 March from Nova Scotia via Antwerp, Belgium where the rotor was transferred from the Atlantic Companion Vessel on to a coastal vessel then shipped to Newcastle upon Tyne. The generator then made its journey to the Siemens Energy Service Fossil specialists will carry out the refurbishment upgrade over the next nine months. Siemens will refurbish the generator rotor body and carry out a full refurbishment programme using new major key components to provide Bruce Power with a strategic spare for their station. The workscope will include engineering, testing, manufacture, assembly and balancing to meet the required Quality Standards and requirements of Bruce Power.

The work will be carried out by a team of engineers and service specialists at Siemens Energy Service Fossil facility, which has the full capability to overhaul Parsons and Siemens generators and turbines. The Newcastle facility offers the full range of manufacturing, refurbishment and testing services and includes four clean condition enclosures complete with retractable roofs, filtered air supply and powered rollers. Equally importantly Siemens has the knowledge, expertise and people that can undertake these critical tasks. Such technical knowledge and experience which is actively cultivated, preserved and passed on by the business makes Siemens unique in its ability to refurbish a machine of this age and design.

Siemens has invested heavily in skills and training for its employees and knowledge management and documentation processes to ensure that this technical expertise is retained within the business and passed on to the next generation of Siemens service engineers. Siemens has invested in a £9 million service training centre at its Newcastle site which provides on-site training (and refresher training) for its 1,200 plus employees working on fossil and renewables service projects. The Integrated Training Centre which has been open since 2008 has been much praised by ministers, including Lord Willis, Nick Clegg, Vince Cable, Chuka Umunna as well as local MPs such as Chi Onwurah and skills organisations like the Engineering Employers Federation (EEF).
