The University of Strathclyde’s Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC) has agreed a Tier One Partnership with global technology giant, Siemens, aiming to stimulate the uptake of digital technologies within the manufacturing industry and support the factories of the future across Scotland.

The UK’s chemical industry has made rapid strides in using digitalization for enhancing the productivity of its physical assets, as part of efforts to keep pace with the Industry 4.0 revolution. Many plants have succeeded in linking physical infrastructures to digital networks and there are ongoing efforts to intensify this inter-connectivity. These technological advances, such as Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) have in the process brought in some serious challenges. As these systems are vulnerable to attacks and hackings, every industry is challenged to put in place multiple measures for ensuring cybersecurity.

Siemens flagship building at Didsbury, Manchester has been designated the company’s UK Head Office. Sir William Siemens House on Princess Road was opened thirty years ago, and the change sees Head Office move from Frimley, Surrey. Employees at Frimley are not affected, and the office continues to be the registered office and an important strategic location for the company. The move will create 60 new jobs on the site.
