Following a flood of applications from local schools and colleges in the area, 10 young people aged between 16 and 18 years old have been selected for a four year advanced apprenticeship in engineering, specifically designed to provide a solid foundation to progress within the business. On joining, apprentices will enjoy a combination of academic study with practical work experience – ranging from mechanical assembly, panel wiring and mechanical/electrical testing.
Matt Ovington, production manager at the Service business in Hebburn, said: “Siemens is very committed to addressing our industry’s skill shortage and an apprenticeship scheme is a great way for young people to combine learning a trade, gaining a qualification and earning money as well as being able to pursue a career with Siemens at the end of their training”.
The 10 new apprentices join the Siemens scheme from a number of schools and colleges in the local area. All needed at least a grade C or above at GSCE level in English, maths and science to qualify for the programme and also had to pass four tests designed to identify their analytical ability, spatial awareness and mathematics skills. During the interview stage of the process, each candidate also gave a presentation on a project they had worked on to key Siemens personnel. All 10 successful apprentices displayed high levels of motivation and commitment to succeed throughout the selection process – a real credit to the local area.
Gill Collinson, training and development manager at Siemens said “Siemens has announced that in September 2012 its intake of UK apprentices will be 160, double the figure hired last year”. Gill continued “For the first time in decades the number of new UK apprentices at the firm is now higher than that of graduates”.
The Hebburn site has a strong heritage of manufacturing and Siemens is committed to invest and expand its workforce with talented young people from the local area.
