University Hospital of North Tees has recently unveiled a SOMATOM® Definition Flash in its Radiology Department.

University Hospital of North Tees, part of North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, has officially unveiled a SOMATOM® Definition Flash in its Radiology Department. The system was chosen for its ability to provide low dose imaging without compromising on image quality, which is expected to benefit the hospital’s critically ill patients and paediatric provision. It is also anticipated the system will improve diagnosis accuracy and enhance the hospital’s cardiac offering.

The use of Stellar Detectors in the SOMATOM Definition Flash generates ultra-thin slices with high spatial resolution, featuring TrueSignal Technology to keep noise levels to a minimum. Additionally, the Dual Source CT system is equipped with two adaptive dose shields, ensuring patients receive the lowest, clinically relevant dose possible. The system includes two X-ray tubes, allowing it to complete an entire heart scan in 250 milliseconds with the right dose to the patient.

“This system is set to transform the service we provide for patients,” states Dr Matthew Trewhella, Clinical Director for Radiology at North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust. “Previously the only way we would have been able to look at heart arteries would have been to take an X-ray, by inserting a tube into the body and into the coronary arteries, but this scanner gives us detailed images of the heart without the need to insert any tubes.”

“Siemens Healthcare is delighted to have provided a SOMATOM Definition Flash to University Hospital of North Tees to enhance its cardiac services,” states Neil Lincoln, Northern Sales Manager at Siemens Healthcare. “The hospital will now be able to offer its patients across Teesside and the surrounding areas an excellent CT service using technology that supplies radiographers with the advanced features they need, and patients with non-invasive imaging services.”
