The Crystal takes shape

Siemens launches London’s newest landmark, ‘the Crystal’, as Mayor of London visits site

Siemens today announced a brand new name for its landmark centre for urban sustainability at a high level ‘topping out’ ceremony in East London.

The £30 million visitor attraction and global knowledge hub – the Crystal (www.thecrystal.org) – will open to the public next summer and show how the latest infrastructure technology can make the world’s cities better places to live and work.
Designed and under construction in two dramatic, crystal-shaped sections, the Crystal will be an eye-catching new landmark for London’s Royal Victoria Docks, at the epicentre of the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson's regeneration plans for the east of the capital. Sited in London's only Enterprise Zone in Newham which offers inward investment incentives to this area, the Crystal is also part of the Mayor's Green Enterprise District.

The flagship building is designed to meet some of the world’s most stringent environmental standards for construction and, as well as being an exhibit in itself, the building will host an exciting new visitor attraction. The centrepiece of the Crystal will be a free interactive exhibition exploring best practice in urban planning and design, sustainable urban technology and infrastructure, from energy and transport to water and security and it will give us a glimpse in the future of cities. It will also host state-of-the-art conference and education facilities as well as a restaurant, café and shop.

The Crystal is designed to become a world-class knowledge centre for thought leadership on urban sustainability. It will contain office space for over 100 desks for infrastructure experts, research partners, planners and academics from around the world. The Crystal will promote independent dialogue and collaboration as key components of urban innovation and the creation of successful, sustainable cities. The Crystal aims to draw international experts to London, and has an educational remit to help inspire a new generation of engineers.

The topping out ceremony – marking the completion of the first major stage of the unique building’s construction – was attended by the Mayor of London and the Mayor of Newham who inspected the innovative sustainable infrastructure being installed at the site.

The Crystal will be within easy walking distance of ExCeL and easy to reach by public transport, including the DLR and the new cable car currently under construction.

The Crystal has been designed by architects Wilkinson Eyre and Pringle Brandon and structural services designer Arup. The building contractor is ISG. Turner & Townsend is supplying project and cost managers. Event Communications is designing the exhibition.

About how the Crystal will work:

Pioneering sustainable technologies showcased in the building include:

  • State of the Art Building Management
    The Crystal implements an integrated, state of the art building management system where everything can be managed from one or many locations. Intelligent analytics, advanced fire sensors, occupancy detection and comfort sensors enable the spaces within the building to be adjusted for maximum comfort (heat, light, ventilation) plus minimum energy consumption.
  • Natural Light and Smart Lighting Technology
    Natural daylight is utilized wherever possible and features include constant light control with automatic adjustment of each and every lamp and LED for brightness and colour, according to time of day and occupancy. For the majority of spaces, artificial light during the day is not required and when it is, there is no waste. Glazing is placed strategically for maximum daylight and minimum unwanted solar gain. Even paving and tarmac materials have been chosen to reduce street light energy use.
  • Low Energy Ventilation System
    When seasonally possible, the building will be naturally ventilated, using motorized opening vents in the roof and facade. The building management system maximizes free cooling, avoiding the use of air conditioning where possible. The air conditioning cooling is primarily taken from the surrounds via the ground source heat pump. During hot days, it takes the heat from the building and puts it back into the ground keeping the building cool and returning the energy to the ground. During cold days it takes heat from the ground and puts it into the building to keep it warm.
  • Intelligent ‘All Electric’ Building & Energy Centre
    A significant part of the electrical power produced in this all electric building will be generated by photovoltaic roof panels, which collect the sun’s energy producing electricity converted with Siemens Inverters to match the building needs. An intelligent Energy Centre manages heat recovery and the sun’s energy will also be used to heat the water used in the restaurants and WCs using solar thermal panels. Energy in the Crystal is monitored so extensively that every kW of electricity used for heat and cooling and every litre of water consumed/generated can be measured to ensure that efficiencies are maintained. Battery storage balances load and demand to intelligently control when power is taken from the grid or any surplus can be exported. E-car charging stations supply green power to electric vehicles (EVs).
  • Rainwater Harvesting and Black Water Recycling
    Rainwater will be harvested and treated for use as drinking water. The Crystal will use water efficient appliances, low use taps and sanitary fittings. A connection to the city’s water system ensures a sufficient supply in dry seasons. A black water recycling plant will reuse 100% of the water used in the building (including toilet flushing) to re-flush the toilets and for watering the landscaping around the building. Finally, the Centre uses a sustainable urban drainage system that minimizes discharge into the sewer system.
  • Efficient Heating: Glazing & Ground Source Heat Pump
    Ground source heat pump provides 100% of the heat used to warm the building and condition the fresh air. Heat is pumped from the ground to the building on cold days (heating season) and from the building to the ground on hot days (cooling season). External glazing and insulated roofing also keep heat in during winter and heat out during summer. The glass is angled away from the sun in some areas to shade the building where sun’s heat is not wanted, and towards the sun in other areas where we want to use the sun for heating the building.
  • Sustainable Landscaping & Community Garden
    Plant and tree species have been selected to reduce the amount of water required for irrigation of the landscape. A Community Garden will provide a series of gardens to promote community involvement for cultivation and education.
