Year 6 pupils at St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Aldershot have proved themselves to be budding entrepreneurs in a TV show-style Junior Apprentice competition.

The event was supported by Siemens plc, a major engineering firm and local employer with its UK headquarters based in Frimley, Surrey. Having secured £750 seed funding from Siemens Small Grants Programme, St. Joseph’s School embarked on a competition for teams within Year 6 (children aged 10-11) with prizes for the best business plan, the most innovative business idea and for the team that generated the most profit.
Eighteen teams took part, dreaming up lucrative ideas to earn cash from baking cakes and selling sweets to making bracelets, washing cars and selling potted plants. Much of the sales activity took place outside the school gate and during the school’s Fun Day when parents and friends and family were targeted by inventive sales and marketing techniques.
Mr Bill James, head teacher at St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School said: “It was great to see lively competition amongst all of the teams. The winners went the extra mile, put some serious thought and work in to their business plans and achieved impressive results. I’d like to thank the parents and local businesses that got involved and supported the project and Siemens for the initial funding that made it possible.”
In total, Year 6 Junior Apprentices raised an impressive £1,480.06 which will go towards a new playground at the school.
On Friday 13th July at the school’s final assembly before the summer holidays, the winners of the three prize categories were announced and certificates and £20 cash prizes per pupil were presented by Anne Keogh, Head of External Relations at Siemens.
The winning teams were:
‘LAB’ for the Most Profitable Business
Winners: Adaeze Onwuelo, Libby Panther, Ben Blundell and Charlotte Allgood
‘Fizzy Fun’ for the Most Innovative Business Idea
Winners: Mike Smith, George Morten and Jamie MacAllister
‘Flower Power’ for the Best Business Plan
Winners: Caitlin Walker and Summer Jane Jackson
Anne Keogh from Siemens plc said: “I was impressed with the sophistication of the St. Joseph’s Junior Apprentice teams, with roles and responsibilities clearly defined, creativity and a real passion to win. The Junior Apprentices from Year 6 are a credit to an excellent school.”
