The Govan substation, located near Glasgow, forms part of the ScottishPower Energy Networks transmission network. The programme of works is focused on ongoing modernisation of the electrical network infrastructure agreed with Ofgem, which encompasses regulation of high voltage electricity wires and high pressure long distance gas pipelines. There is a general need to upgrade assets to help improve the reliability of the electricity network. The new transformers to be installed, as part of this project, will increase the capacity of Govan substation from 60 MVA to 90 MVA.
The Govan project is a two circuit 132kV transformer replacement program including the installation of a temporary bypass circuit. Siemens will supply, install and commission 132kV disconnectors, earth switches and surge arrestors. The works include the off-line build of new transformer bay and sealing end compound and major civil works to expand the site. The project is scheduled to last eighteen months and will involve the Siemens Transmission and Distribution Services’ team delivering project management, engineering (primary and secondary), site installation and commissioning as well as major civil engineering management.

The programme will be undertaken in three stages, from January to September 2011 (Stage 1), September 2011 to June 2012 (Stage 2), and Stage 3 June 2012 to November 2012. The construction programme is targeted for completion by the summer of 2012. The substation will be fully operational by 2013.
