The original meter reading contract was awarded to Siemens in 2003 and covered two out of eight of British Gas’s geographical areas serving approximately 2.5 million domestic and business customers in London, the South East, and the East of England. Building on Siemens strong relationship with British Gas, the new contract effective from the 1st April 2010 doubles the meter reading and data collection footprint to approximately 5 million customers and provides services for 50% of British Gas's national coverage with the addition of services for Wales, the South West and the Midlands.

Siemens will operate the contract from its Metering Services headquarters in Nottingham. The operations centre employs 1,200 staff, who provides nationwide support in data processing, data management and field services within the utilities market for gas, electric, water and commercial and industrial customers.
