The £1 billion high voltage direct current project - a joint venture between National Grid and ScottishPower Transmission - will help to bring renewable energy from Scotland to homes and businesses in Wales and England. Construction of the Western Link is being carried out by a consortium of Siemens and Prysmian. Once fully completed in 2018, it will be one of the longest HVDC cables in the world, transmitting up to 2,200MW of electricity at 600kV.
Carl Ennis, Managing Director Siemens Energy Management Division UK & Ireland, expressed his delight at receiving the award. “We’re absolutely overjoyed to receive this award for health and safety excellence in relation to the Western HVDC Link project. To receive such recognition amongst our peers in the Project Management community makes us very proud and reinforces the message that Zero Harm is not just a strap line or a target, it’s a way of life for us at Siemens”.
The judges of the award noted that, amongst many other strong points, the Siemens entry showed, “A true health and safety culture in which people are open and honest”, and “What particularly stood out was the transparency around failure and success”.
