Siemens to build and maintain combined cycle power plant in the UK

United Kingdom, 2007-Feb-07

Siemens Power Generation (PG) is to build a combined cycle power plant near Southampton for Marchwood Power.

Marchwood Power is a 50/50 joint venture of ESBI and Scottish and Southern Energy which will jointly operate the plant on completion, scheduled for summer of 2009. The contract including a long-term service agreement for the power plant is valued at approximately 500 million euros (£350m).

Siemens will build the gas-fired combined cycle power plant with a capacity of 840 megawatts (MW). For the turnkey project Siemens will supply two gas turbines, one steam turbine and three generators. The scope of supply will also include the entire mechanical equipment with two heat-recovery steam generators, and the electrical and instrumentation and control equipment as well as a 22km gas pipeline to connect the plant to the national gas transmission network.

The Marchwood Power plant will be the eighth turnkey power station constructed by Siemens in the UK,” said Klaus Voges, President of Siemens Power Generation. “With a capacity of more than 6,000 MW these plants confirm our strong UK power plant presence.

Up to 12,000 MW of new generation capacity could be required in the UK by 2012 to meet the growing demand and to compensate plant retirements. Renewables as well as gas-fired combined cycle power plants are integral parts of the UK’s aim at reducing CO2 emissions. Siemens recently secured an order for the Whitelee Wind Farm to be located south of Glasgow in Scotland. With an installed capacity of 322MW it will be Europe's largest onshore wind farm.
