Siemens and the IMechE have signed an MOU to promote professional engineering education. Siemens, a leading UK engineering employer and major investor in skills and training is keen to help drive forward the cause of professional education. Strengthening its ties with leading engineering institutions, such as the IMechE contributes towards this goal.
The idea for the MOU began last summer when the IMechE’s chief executive Stephen Tetlow, and Denis Healy, business development manager for Yorkshire and the North East met with the Siemens team and decided to develop a closer working relationship. This culminated in the signing of the MOU at a ceremony at the Siemens UK Headquarters on Tuesday 19 June.
Stephen Tetlow, said: “We are highly supportive of this important partnership with Siemens, which has been marked by the signing of an MOU. For the Institution, it marks our further commitment to supporting multi-national engineering employers as they focus on the continuous professional development of their workforce, to ensure highly skilled employees with high professional standards. We share with Siemens a real desire to demonstrate how a skilled engineering workforce drives innovation and wealth creation in forward-looking, world-class technology companies, and it is important for our members to know that we are being proactive in our support for a high-tech manufacturing company at this time.”
The MOU will see the Institution work with Siemens to enable engineers to achieve chartered engineer status via the Monitored Professional Development Scheme (MPDS) through a number of tailored workshops. The Institution will also offer support to Graduates requiring further learning, mid-career engineers, through Company Based Registration (CBR) schemes and Career Learning Assessment (CLA) Workshops whilst also offering support to apprentices working towards their Engineering Technician (EngTech).
In return Siemens will actively encourage its engineers to join the Institution and undertake programmes of Continuous Professional Development (CPD). It will also encourage them to take part in Institution activities and host events. The MOU will help promote effective communication links with Siemens engineers, through the development of the IMechE ILT (Industrial Liaison Team) and Professional Engineering Development Scheme (PEDS) Steering Group.

Siemens employs 13,000 people in the UK, with around 8,000 employees engaged in engineering and manufacturing. Siemens invests heavily in skills and training through apprenticeships, graduate schemes and in-house training, and has pioneered many new initiatives, such as its internal academy for project management (PM@Siemens), the new school of engineering at the University of Lincoln and a £9m Energy Service Training Centre in Newcastle. Siemens is also planning a new Rail Training Academy.
