In the last twelve months Siemens Subsea has donated a grand total of £30k to support key educational projects at Ulverston Victoria High School, a flagship local school. The initiative, part of the wider Siemens focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects was led by the senior management team at Siemens Subsea. The donation is the first of its kind for the school and is significantly enhancing its design and technology facilities.

The total figure was made up of two separate donations. One third of the total (£10k) was donated in 2013 to update the Design and Technology facility and the remaining two thirds (£20k) donated this year will supply tooling, machinery and PPE (personal protective equipment) to the department.

Mike Marklove, director of technology at Siemens Subsea commented:

“Siemens’ donation is in recognition of the excellent teaching that Ulverston Victoria
High School is providing for the local community - educating students to an
exceptional standard. We hope that by helping them to enhance their facilities it will
encourage the adoption of engineering and science subjects by students and
possibly also to consider a future career in engineering.”

This year’s donation will be used over the next six months in collaboration with
Siemens Subsea as part of its ongoing work to bridge the gap between education
and industry. Design and technology students from the will be encouraged to visit
the Siemens Subsea Centre of Excellence at Ulverston to experience leading-edge
design and engineering at first hand. They will also be introduced to the type of
careers available in engineering and engage in practical tasks. Students will be
encouraged to bring their projects into the Siemens Subsea laboratory, where they
will be able to utilise its world-class facilities to test their projects in a working
laboratory environment.

David Barlow head of Art, Design and Technology for the Ulverston Victoria High
School sponsorship said:

“At Ulverston Victoria High School we have a determination to develop a Design &
Technology curriculum that engages and inspires students into further education
and careers in the technical, creative and service industries. We realised this
couldn’t be done in isolation, so we forged closer links with Siemens Subsea.

This sponsorship is having a tremendous effect on the teaching and learning of our
students and the environment in which they learn. We have been able to refurbish
parts of the Design Technology building into a modern functional environment that
better emphasises the importance of teaching design and practical skills – from
traditional skills and techniques through to the latest cutting-edge technology, such
as 3D printing.

The last two years have had a significant positive impact for our students and the
perception of Design &Technology in school and the wider community. We can’t
thank the senior team at Siemens Subsea enough for the time and effort they have
put into this partnership.”

Siemens plays a key role in engineering skills and training in the UK locally and
nationally. Siemens has pioneered an engineering portal for schools and works with
many schools and colleges around the country, including Cumbria, to support the
STEM agenda. Siemens is a lead sponsor of the Big Bang Science and Engineering
Fair and National Apprenticeship Week, which take place in March. Siemens
Subsea will also be celebrating its own STEM engagement and apprenticeship
programme at the Subsea Centre of Excellence in Ulverston, providing the
opportunity to come and learn more about apprentice opportunities in 2014.
