Ulverston, 2017-Mar-01
Duncan is a member of the Ulverston Triathlon Club that was founded only three years ago. Another Siemens employee, Paul McKenny coaches the triathletes. Duncan joined the group in 2013 and has trained with them ever since.
A keen swimmer and runner in his youth, Duncan represented Cumbria as a runner and continued up until his early 20’s representing his county in this discipline.
Duncan said: “Sport has always been my main passion in life, but until I started competing in Triathlons I had never considered that it might be possible for me to represent Great Britain. It wasn’t until I purchased my first bike through the Siemens Cycle to Work scheme that I got interested in cycling. It was at this point the Ulverston Triathlon Club was formed, so I decided to join.
“For the previous 10 years, I hadn’t done much other than play the odd game of football and take the children swimming at weekends”.
Triathlon is probably the only sport that offers non elite athletes an opportunity to represent their country on the international stage.
Duncan adds, “All I had to do was register my interest with the British Triathlon Union, put in lots of training and compete in at least one of the qualification races. I took part in the qualification race in Shropshire in May 2016”.
A triathlon is a series of three events; a swim, a bike ride and a run. Duncan is competing in the Olympic distance which means a 1,500 metre swim, followed by a 40km bike ride and finally a 10km run.
Duncan puts in up to 13 hours of training per week. This consists of an early training session in the morning before work, followed by at least another hour of training in the evening.
Having received sponsorship from Ulverston accountancy firm JF Hornby & Co, Duncan is now looking for other suitable sponsors to further support his dream of competing with the best triathletes in Europe later this year.
Duncan works at Siemens Subsea in Ulverston as a Bid Manager and lives in the town with his wife and two young children.
