Frimley, UK, 2016-Feb-24
Both now lend their expertise to Groundwork UK, a charity dedicated to promoting greener living and working; improving people’s prospects and creating better, greener places.
Graham Hartley, Managing Director of Siemens Power Generation Services has been co-opted to work as Chair of the Federation board – the body with oversight of all of the independent charities under the Groundwork banner. With a 30-year pedigree in engineering, much of it at senior management level, Graham draws directly upon his experience of leading organisations. One of his responsibilities as Managing Director, based at Shields Road in Byker, is oversight of the training school where apprentices are taken from raw school leavers, to some of the most skilled technicians in the renewable energy industry.
Graham’s appointment as Chair follows on from his two-year stint association with Groundwork NorthEast as a trustee.
Talking about his appointment as Chair, Graham says, “It’s a great honour to be asked to take on a position such as this, aiding projects in improving the environments and lives of people of so many varied areas, backgrounds and ages. Groundwork has a proud tradition of being, and making, that difference and I intent to carry on the superb work that the charity does.”
With Graham overseeing projects across the UK from Groundwork’s seven regional hubs, the charity will continue its 30-year history of creating and improving sustainable communities. It does this by using a tried and trusted methodology; working within small local communities, giving project members the right tools for transforming their area, engaging with all local stakeholders in the community and trying to address as many issues that affect the community with a single investment.
Following his taking on the new role, a second member of Siemens’ staff in Newcastle has stepped into the role he vacated on the Board of Trustees.
Danielle Turton, a communications manager based in Newcastle, takes on this new challenge in addition to her busy professional role. A graduate with a Masters degree from Teesside University, she brings a fresh perspective to the issues facing the projects supported by the charity in the North East. Danielle says, “I’m delighted to be accepted on the board of trustees for Groundwork South Tyneside and Northumberland. Having lived in the region for over ten years, it’s a pleasure to be part of an organisation which delivers so much in the local community. I’m also looking forward to lending my expertise as a communicator to the role; to help promote and really shout about the great work that Groundwork is doing.”
The last word must go to Graham, “I’m delighted to have Danielle join me in working with Groundwork; Newcastle and the North East has so much potential for change to enrich people’s lives and the communities that they live in, and she is the perfect choice to see that this gets the opportunity it deserves.”
