Two important £multimillion orders from international aluminium company Rio Tinto Alcan will bring additional work into Siemens’ Newcastle facility later this year.
The latest contract awards, which build on Siemens excellent relationship with Rio Tinto Alcan, cover refurbishment and outage work at the Alcan aluminium smelter at Lynemouth in Northumberland. Work will commence on the Unit 1 IP (Intermediate Pressure) Steam Turbine Module this summer followed by the refurbishment of the Unit 2 IP in the summer of 2010.
Siemens is already undertaking a rolling lifetime extension programme at Rio Tinto Alcan’s ‘captive’ power station in Northumberland, as well as manufacturing IP turbine rotor and inner cylinders for the power station, which uses three Parsons steam turbine generators to generate the electricity for the aluminium smelter.
“We are delighted to have secured these additional contracts with Rio Tinto Alcan,” said Carl Ennis, Managing Director of Siemens Energy Service Fossil. “It is particularly pleasing to be able to provide a boost to our Newcastle-based employees, recognising their continued commitment to quality service and manufacturing excellence.”
Vaun Campbell at Rio Tinto Alcan, added: “We have a long-standing relationship with Siemens, built over a number of years, and these new orders not only represent continuity with the original equipment manufacturer but also generates additional work and supports the local manufacturing industry.”
