Siemens has announced its success in securing a new order for an offshore wind power plant at West of Duddon Sands in the Irish sea. Siemens will supply 108 wind turbines for the project to a consortium of Danish DONG Energy and Scottish Power Renewables, which is part of the Spanish Iberdrola group. With a total capacity of 389 megawatts (MW) the wind power plant will supply approximately 300,000 British households with clean electricity. This will make it among the largest offshore wind power plants in the world, when it is commissioned in 2014.
The West of Duddon Sands wind power plant will be located in the Irish Sea. Siemens will be responsible for supply, installation and commissioning of the wind turbines, each with a capacity of 3.6 MW and a rotor diameter of 120 meters. "This order underscores our leading position in offshore wind power business, both globally and in the UK" said Jens-Peter Saul, CEO of Siemens Wind Power Business Unit. "It has been twenty years since we installed the world’s first offshore wind farm. Today, offshore wind power is one of the fastest growing energy technologies – growing to become a significant backbone of sustainable energy supply" Saul added.

According to the latest World Market Update of BTM Consult, Siemens is the world’s largest supplier to the offshore market. Siemens has more than 600 wind turbines with a capacity of over 1,600 MW in operation. Siemens has also confirmed orders for close to 4GW of offshore wind power plants. Several of these projects are already under construction.
