Siemens scoops three awards at North of England Excellence Awards

Siemens Energy Sector scooped three awards at the North of England Excellence Awards in Leeds last week

United Kingdom, 2010-Oct-22

Siemens Transmission and Distribution Ltd (STDL) has been named as the overall winner at the North of England Business Excellence Awards 2010. STDL was one of 11 organisations honoured at the awards ceremony, together with Siemens Energy Service UK.

These prestigious annual awards, organised by North of England Excellence, evaluate organisations against the Business Excellence Model, an international management tool for assessing business performance. They are seen by many as ‘business Oscars’ and are the only awards in the North of England to be endorsed by the British Quality Foundation and Chartered Quality Institute.

Siemens has a strong established presence in the North East employing around 2,000 staff across a number of businesses. Siemens Transmission and Distribution Ltd (STDL) with offices in both Hebburn and Monkton, is the UK market leader in power transmission projects for large offshore grid projects. This is complemented by a service department providing operations and maintenance. Siemens Energy Service UK based in Newcastle is part of a world-leading service and maintenance business for conventional coal-fired and combined cycle power plants and wind power plants.

Both businesses pride themselves on their traditions of excellence in service, customer focus, business processes and committed teams. For the awards entrants faced stringent criteria based on the EFQM Business Excellence Model. Entrants have their operations scrutinised by teams of specially trained independent assessors.

In addition to winning an Excellence Award in the ‘large company’ category, STDL was also named Business of the Year. The judges praised the “inspirational leadership and passion” of management and the way in which the organisation had successfully integrated the different cultures and working practices following the integration of VA-Tech UK Ltd, four years ago.

The Special Award for Leadership went to Siemens Energy Service UK. The Leadership Award recognises those organisations whose leaders ‘shape the future’ and act as role models for the company’s values and ethics, ‘inspiring trust at all times’. The judges look for leadership teams that are flexible and that anticipate and react to situations in a timely manner to ensure the organisation’s ongoing success.

Siemens Energy Service team submitted its detailed award application in February this year. A team of three external assessors then visited the Newcastle site in June. Over three days they questioned managers and employees from across the business on specific areas to check the validity of the submission.

The feedback report commended Siemens for the approachability and visibility of its leadership team and for its ‘open door’ management style. The assessors also saw as strengths the implementation of the ‘Lean’ productivity programme, the way employees are empowered to drive improvements in their own individual areas.
