Manchester, 2014-Jul-11
Siemens Industry has been awarded a prestigious award in recognition of its community investment programme, including a number of projects in and around the Manchester area.
The Didsbury-based company has been presented with a CommunityMark, the UK’s
highest national standard for leadership and excellence in community investment, run by the charity Business in the Community (BITC). The standard was awarded at a prestigious gala dinner this week in London, attended by HRH the Prince of Wales and Prince Henry of Wales (Prince Harry).
The CommunityMark recognises companies that lead the way in community investment. To achieve the award, companies undergo a rigorous assessment process. This includes an
in-depth review of how they invest in their communities and the difference that this investment makes. Before this year’s awards only 44 companies held this sought after standard.
Siemens is involved in a range of community projects, which were assessed by BITC as part of this award. These include:
- Partnership with Barlow RC High School in West Didsbury to provide a range of activities to support the school, including weekly Science Club sessions delivered by Siemens’ STEM ambassadors.
- Involvement in the The Biospheric Project to support the transformation of a disused mill on the banks of the River Irwell in Salford into an 'urban farm', laboratory and research centre.
- Sponsorship of the Manchester Science Festival (run by MOSI) since 2009.
The assessment identified a range of strengths in the Siemens Industry approach to community investment, particularly noting strong levels of engagement and support from both management and employees.
Commenting, Juergen Maier, Chief Executive, Siemens plc, said:
“We have always seen it as a priority to be a good neighbour and support our local community, so we are delighted that this has been recognised with this award. Thanks in particular must go to our many employees who give time and effort to support these activities and, of course, to the local partners and projects that we are proud to support.”
Commenting Stephen Howard, Business in the Community’s Chief Executive said:
“I congratulate Siemens for joining the growing network of CommunityMark companies today. Business has a vital role to help create vibrant and prosperous communities. CommunityMark holders are at the heart of this movement, demonstrating an impressive commitment to identifying and responding to social needs. Crucially, these companies understand that excellence in community investment not only has a positive and valuable impact on society, but also creates real business benefits. We hope their example will inspire many more businesses to put responsible behaviour at the heart of how they do business.”
