Siemens receives major order for offshore wind farm in Britain

United Kingdom, 2007-May-23

Siemens Power Generation is to build a further offshore wind farm in Britain. Siemens will supply 30 wind power systems with a combined capacity of 108 megawatts (MW) for the Gunfleet Sands project off the coast of Essex.

Gunfleet Sands, near Clacton-on-Sea, will be the third British offshore project in which the largest Siemens wind turbine with a capacity of 3.6 MW is used. The purchaser is the Danish company DONG Energy A/S, the world’s leading operator of offshore wind farms. The total investment in the offshore wind farm is approximately 270 million euros.

"With the latest order from the UK we are consolidating our leading position in the rapidly expanding offshore market," said Andreas Nauen, head of Siemens' wind power division.

"We are particularly pleased that, following the Nysted project in Denmark and Burbo Banks in Britain, DONG has for the third time chosen Siemens as supplier for one of its offshore wind farm projects."

Construction of the Gunfleet Sands offshore wind farm is scheduled to begin in 2009. Siemens is currently working on the offshore projects at Lillgrund in Sweden and Burbo Banks, off the coast of Liverpool. Next year Siemens will build the largest British offshore wind farms Lynn and Inner Dowsing with a maximum production capacity of 180 MW off the Lincolnshire coast.
