Siemens Healthcare recently demonstrated the ACUSON FreestyleTM wireless ultrasound system at the London Society of Regional Anesthesia’s (LSORA) Evidence Based Peri-Operative Medicine (EBPOM) 3rd London Workshops for Regional Anaesthesia. The system was put to clinical use for the first time in the UK with delegates able to explore the new system and take part in hands-on sessions involving accurate ultrasound-guided needle placement on a variety of models.
In addition to hands-on sessions with the ACUSON Freestyle, delegates were given demonstrations and took part in workshop sessions on a variety of topics such as needling, supraclavicular & interscalene, infraclavicular, femoral and obturator blocks. Question and answer sessions were also hosted at the workshops including ‘ask the expert’ slots on themes such as paravertebral, central neuraxial, abdominal blocks and limbs.
Delegates were able to use the ACUSON Freestyle’s wireless transducers and ergonomic interface which features a range of up to three metres, enabling remote control and operation. Three different types of wireless transducers can be used in conjunction with the Freestyle, covering a range of nerve imaging but also general imaging, vascular, and high-frequency applications such as for musculoskeletal procedures. The system has a 38cm, high-resolution LED display, plus the system console can be mounted easily on a lightweight cart and also operates on battery power for added flexibility and mobility.
“This is the third, one-day scanning workshop in ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia in collaboration with EBPOM 2013,” states Dr. Amit Pawa, Chairman of the London Society of Regional Anaesthesia. “This year’s course was adapted from feedback from previous courses with each station preceded by a live scanning demonstration by one of our experts. Delegates were able to practice needling once they completed scanning of live models, such as with the ACUSON Freestyle from Siemens Healthcare.”
“The LSORA EBPOM workshop was busy, with delegates keen to put the ACUSON Freestyle’s wireless transducers into practice,” states Bernadette Leonard, UK Business Manager, Ultrasound and Echocardiology Products at Siemens Healthcare. “Siemens was pleased to demonstrate this innovative technology and support the educational needs of candidates at the third ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia workshop, including demonstrating how to scan and locate nerves for basic and advanced blocks.”
