Siemens, which ranked top of Dow Jones Sustainability Index in 2011, has further confirmed its green credentials, by incorporating an electric vehicle charging facility at its Transmission Service business in Hebburn, South Tyneside. Siemens has adopted a low carbon transport solution, to reduce its carbon footprint between sites in the area. Siemens believes that by adopting electric vehicles they can save around 5,000 tonnes of CO2 per annum (based on 10,000 miles per year per car) and help set the standard that other companies in the area can follow.
“As a leading employer in South Tyneside, we realised early on that we had both an obligation and opportunity to improve our carbon footprint and impact in the local area,” said Martin Bell, director of Energy Automation business in South Tyneside. Des Young, director of Service continued “We make many small journeys between our sites and recognised the opportunity we had to improve our environmental impact and develop a programme to embed sustainability in all areas, including transport. We hope this will be a model for many other initiatives”.
Siemens has installed its high power, innovative charging stations at its Hebburn site. These provide fast and safe charging for the Siemens fleet of two Nissan Leaf vehicles.
“The Siemens charging stations can fully charge our vehicles in one hour ensuring that they are always available” said Mark Bonnor-Morris, Siemens head of Electromobillity UK and Ireland. “Siemens also provides a full supply, installation and maintenance service. As the UK’s largest provider of traffic controls we have a specialist field force that is able to support eCar charging infrastructure as part of a much larger portfolio of work. This ensures that the eCar chargers are maintained to a high and consistent service level ensuring the highest performance in terms of availability and safety”
Siemens has already introduced electric vehicles and charging at its operation in Lincoln. The plan is to roll out these charging stations to other parts of the North East. Siemens is working together with South Tyneside Council to explore this potential, and also looking at developing a similar solution at its Energy Service business in North Tyneside.
“We are very pleased that Siemens have taken the initiative to use electric transportation” said Councillor Iain Malcolm, leader of South Tyneside Council. “The council is working hard to raise the profile of the region as a sustainable place to do business and this initiative from Siemens, one of our leading employers, helps set a standard that we hope others will follow.”
Siemens is already engaged in a number of major projects across Europe to devise and develop solutions and business models that will help establish Electric Vehicles as a viable and attractive transport option in the near term.
As delivery partner for Source London, the Capital’s plan to develop the UK’s largest electric vehicle charge point network with more charge points than petrol stations in the city, Siemens provides IT and services for the back office operations. Siemens capabilities in the Electric Vehicle market extend significantly further, from charging infrastructure and software to service maintenance, call-centre management and fleet services.
