Siemens Healthcare recently hosted a range of educational sessions on various topical subjects including latest technological advances, optimising clinical workflow and techniques for clinical best practice to delegates at UKRC 2014. The sessions accompanied the imaging innovations on display which aimed to provide new possibilities for clinical detection, accurate diagnosis and targeted therapy to help overcome challenges in the clinical setting.

CT sessions included Dual Energy scanning techniques, looking at protocols, post processing and advantages that Dual Energy information can provide. The progression of Siemens CT technology was also presented, looking at innovations such as the STRATON® X-ray tube, a powerful tube which is much smaller than conventional designs and UFC (Ultra Fast Ceramics) detectors.

Russell Lodge, CT Business Manager at Siemens Healthcare states, “Siemens is dedicated to supporting its customers in every way possible – and educational sessions have a significant role to play. The range of educational sessions on topical issues during UKRC not only provided delegates with information about the latest advances in Siemens imaging technology, but also gave a valuable insight into optimising workflow and techniques. This ensures delegates are making the most of technology to improve clinical efficiency and bolster the patient experience.”

In addition, Siemens presented developments and advances in paediatric imaging within MR. Topics included sequence and coil developments, adaptation of techniques, safety considerations during scanning, and advances in interoperative MR. The popular subject of optimising advanced visualisation workflow was also covered everyday at UKRC which revolved around the use of syngo®.via to reduce radiologist time and effort during clinical workflows.

Complementary to the Cios Alpha C-arm that was on display at UKRC, an educational session on the progression of mobile C-arm technology from image intensifier to flat panel was presented, looking into the technological journey of image intensifiers over time and their progression to the use of the flat panel detector. Siemens MAX (Multiple Advances in X-ray) detectors were also on display, supporting a session on getting the most out of wireless detectors in digital radiography to help clinicians achieve excellent image quality in a timely manner.

Siemens also looked at complex procedures taking place in the interventional room and the potential for a rise in dose. This included advice on basic techniques for dose reduction and how advances introduced by Siemens have helped to measure, record and reduce dose to the lowest appropriate amount in the interventional room.

In addition to the on-stand educational sessions, Siemens also hosted a satellite symposium which was well attended by delegates and explored efficiency improvements under the pressures of today’s healthcare industry. This included a case study around the partnership between Siemens and University Hospital of North Staffordshire which examined the strength of existing practices, the use of technology and the efficiency of employed methodologies in the clinical environment. Combining scanner Utilisation Management data, departmental processes and a period of onsite observation, comparisons against best-in-class methodologies and significant efficiency savings were highlighted, including areas for future development or improvement.
