Siemens Metering Services’ Procurement Team Executive, Ian Greatorex, based in the Siemens Wollaton office, has been awarded the prestigious title of East Midlands Volunteer of the Year.
The award was presented during the annual Business in the Community (BiTC) East Midlands awards ceremony at the Trent Vineyard in Nottingham on Wednesday evening. Over 250 business leaders were present at the event which recognised and celebrated the positive impact that businesses in the East Midlands have made in the marketplace, workplace, environment and community.
Siemens Metering Services’ Marketing Manager, Rob Gornall commented that “this is always a hotly contested award and we're all delighted for Ian who has been a shining example to all employees in terms of what can be achieved with a great deal of effort, enthusiasm and limited funding.”
Ian, who lives in Beeston, was recognised for his tireless efforts to set up and maintain an Eco and Gardening Club at Seagrave Primary School in Strelley. He was instrumental in the creation of an allotment at the school at minimal cost, getting pupils interested in the origins of food and encouraging them to grow their own fruit, vegetables and plants. In addition to his work at Seagrave, Ian also coordinates Siemens Metering Services’ conservation work with the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust as well as organising regular lunch time litter picks to tidy up the local environment.
The partnership between Siemens and Seagrave was established in the summer of 2007 and has seen an amazing first couple of years, beginning with a Breakfast Club and “Right to Read” scheme and progressing to the inspiring Eco and Gardening Club.
This award follows on from Siemens Metering Services’ success last year when its partnership with Seagrave Primary School was recognised with the Business in the Community Cares - Partnership of the Year Award. The company has committed over 50 volunteers to the project since September 2008.
Siemens’ partnership with Seagrave School is a key element of the company’s Generation21 programme - a worldwide education programme for pre-school, school and university students with the aim to generate interest in science and technology related subjects and careers. Siemens encourages its employees to help make a difference to local communities; helping local pupils achieve and recognising local talent.
