Siemens is headline sponsor of leading sustainability event in London

Siemens is the lead sponsor of BASELondon which takes place at the new Capital Suite at ExCeL centre, London on the 27th May. The event will be opened by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson and is focused on the sustainability agenda for London. The Mayor’s vision is to create a capital city that is truly attractive to business, visitors and the whole community. BASE London will also celebrate the achievements of the city to date and the role and contribution of partners, such as Siemens, helping London to become a ‘smart showcase’.

Andreas J. Goss, chief executive of Siemens in the UK, is one of four key panellists at the event, and will explore the practical dimensions of how to achieve the Mayor’s vision of a sustainable and smart capital city. Commenting on the event and Siemens’ role, Goss said: “As a global pioneer of sustainable city solutions, Siemens is perfectly positioned to answer the key questions of sustainable urban development, demographic change and energy security. Siemens has a long standing presence and track record across all areas of London life, from buildings to infrastructure and transport to energy generation and management. We are delighted to be supporting BASELondon, dedicated to promoting the sustainability agenda for London.”

Although urban areas cover only one percent of the planet’s surface, they consume around 75% of the world’s produced energy and emit about 80 percent of the gases that are harmful to the climate. With increasing trends towards urbanisation, cities face a daunting challenge to develop sustainable infrastructure, transportation and policies. Sustainability is at the heart of the Mayor’s agenda to make London “the best city in the world”.

Siemens commissioned the Economist Intelligence Unit’s European Green Cities Index, which was first presented at the UNFCC summit in Copenhagen in December 2009. The index rates the rates the environmental performance of 30 leading cities. London ranked 11th overall according to the index, a strong performance for an established global city with a population of more than 7.6 million. London performed consistently in the categories, such as CO2 emissions, energy, buildings, transport and air quality. These are all target areas within the Mayor’s strategy for a greener London, which by 2025 intends to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 60 per cent, amongst other key measures. BASELondon will address these issues in its programme throughout the day.
