Siemens Industry launches ‘Answers for the Environment’ event

Highlights from the conference include a presentation from the Economist Intelligence Unit on The European Green Cities Index. This unique research, first presented at the recent UNFCC summit in Copenhagen, provides a ranking of Europe's 30 major cities including London, in terms of their relative environmental impact across eight key categories, from energy and CO2 emissions to water and waste. In addition, Professor Ian Fells, Founder chairman of the New and Renewable Energy Centre and Emeritus Professor of Energy Conversion at The University of Newcastle, will be providing a post-Copenhagen review of energy and environmental policy. The contribution cities make to climate change will be tackled in the Sustainable Cities exhibition. Although major urban areas cover only one percent of the planet’s surface, they consume roughly 75 percent of the world’s produced energy and emit about 80 percent of the gases that are harmful to the climate. Buildings alone account for 40 per cent of all UK emissions and each home in the UK creates enough CO2 in a year to fill a hot air balloon (around 5.5 tonnes). With increasing trends towards urbanisation, cities need sustainable infrastructure, transportation and policies that are compatible with the environment. Siemens will demonstrate how it provides answers to these urban challenges with technologies for rail and road travel, greener buildings, low energy LED lighting, water and waste as well as safety and security.

Continuing the theme of energy, water and waste, the Answers for Industry exhibition will feature innovative automation and drive solutions for more efficient use of energy, environmental technology for ensuring a reliable water supply, as well as flue gas analytics for monitoring industrial emissions. Investment in these technologies to become more operationally efficient brings a rapid return on investment for most companies, ensuring profitability alongside environmental responsibility. A master class in exploiting ‘green’ financing opportunities will demonstrate how energy efficient solutions can, in many cases, be implemented without capital cost.

In fiscal 2009, Siemens generated revenue of €23 billion with products and solutions from its Environmental Portfolio - the largest in the world. In the same time period, Siemens customers worldwide were able to reduce their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by a total of 210 million tonnes with products and solutions from the same portfolio. This amount is equal to the annual CO2 emissions of New York, Tokyo, London and Berlin put together.
