Siemens is a major part of the economic success of the city and Lincoln region, with a history dating back 150 years and a current workforce of around 1,500. Siemens is a world class manufacturer of gas turbines for use in power generation and mechanical drive applications. In Lincoln, Siemens manufactures gas turbines between 5 -15 MW output for international markets, with over 90% of its machines destined for export markets. The service business provides support for all its gas turbine products.
Siemens is making significant investments in the region. In addition to its proposal to move its service business to new purpose built premises in Teal Park, announced in 2010, the company also plans to invest in the existing infrastruture on the Main Works site in Lincoln. This will include development of a new frontage and customer facilities, reaffirming its longterm commitment to a state-of-the art manufacturing facility in Lincoln.
Siemens’ support of the new engineering school at the University of Lincoln, its apprenticeship scheme, and work with local schools, colleges and the community demonstrates further its strong commitment to engineering skills and training within the Lincolnshire area.
These investments are supported by an order book that has gone from strength to strength. In the last eighteen months, Siemens has seen strong demand for its gas turbine products globally, including some significant multiple engine orders in South America and most recently Australia.
Today’s news also includes a positive boost to the packaging business, which has been in the process of transformation across the Siemens global network. Siemens’s new global packaging Centre of Competence focused on its small (<15MW) gas turbine package range is to be based in Lincoln. This is great recognition for the local business. The new centre will provide support to the Siemens global network, which is currently being established to drive future sales internationally. This will bring an increase in business for the core gas turbine manufacturing business in Lincoln. Siemens will continue to package two product lines in Lincoln and there will be no further changes to staffing as a result of the relocation of operations. The company will work with employees and unions to ensure smooth transition.
Nick Muntz, managing director of Siemens in Lincoln commenting on the success said: “Today our order book is at a 10 -year high and future prospects continue to look postive. We have won a number of large orders recently, and continue to make significant investments in new facilities for both our manufacturing and service businesses, and in staff skills and development. Our recognition as the new global centre of competence for packaging is confirmation of the quality, expertise and professionalism of the Lincoln team. We look forward to a successful year ahead.”
