Siemens helps make the UK 'smarter' with new metering solutions

Siemens launches Sie-Smart, its new range of smart metering solutions

Siemens, the leading global engineering and technology firm has just announced the introduction of the Sie-Smart range of smart metering solutions for both residential and commercial use. This latest offering from Siemens Metering, Communications & Services is part of the new Infrastructure & Cities division's portfolio focused on developing an optimised infrastructure for a more sustainable energy future.

Globally, we are facing some of the most acute challenges ever. Climate change, rapid urbanisation and a growing population are putting unprecedented pressure on the earth's resources. Governments everywhere are looking for sustainable ways to meet these challenges, especially in the areas of transport, energy and buildings. Currently, buildings account for around 46% of the CO2 emitted in the UK. Energy management in buildings is therefore a key component in the battle against climate change and sustainable energy usage.

Smart metering has a crucial role to play in helping households and businesses to manage their energy consumption more efficiently. A national roll-out of 53 million smart meters is just starting in the UK with the aim to be substantially complete by 2019.

As the largest independent provider of metering solutions to the UK market Siemens is ideally placed to support energy suppliers and businesses in their journey from traditional services to the smart metering landscape.

Siemens' smart portfolio spans the energy chain from delivery of smart grid solutions, which help manage diverse energy sources, through the complete domestic smart value chain, of which smart metering is part. The Sie-Smart range of solutions includes: smart meter asset finance and management, installation and maintenance, smart grid applications and services, energy supplier data and management services, smart data and communications services and a package called Smart 4 Business Services.

The functionality of this broad range of specialist areas is driven by the knowledge gained through Siemens’ international experience in smart implementations, together with its UK industry experience to offer next generation solutions, incorporating a financing option and communication solutions utilising GPRS and Long Range Radio. As David Lee, responsible for portfolio development at Siemens Metering, Communications & Services said:

"Siemens is a highly experienced provider of metering solutions; we offer customers security in an unstable world. Our smart portfolio encompasses both financing as well as the latest technology and services. Our latest range of solutions provides a big step in building the foundation blocks for a more energy efficient future."

The Sie-Smart range of solutions supports the foundation stage of the smart meter roll-out from 2012 as well as a controlled transfer to the DCC, when available, for compliant meters and communications. This will continue to add value following the introduction of the DCC as the solution migrates to provide a ‘Supplier Hub’ service.
