Siemens completes SafeZone roll-out around London

Siemens, a global leader in traffic management technology, has recently completed the deployment of the UK’s largest, and busiest, permanent average speed enforcement system across London using its proven and award-winning SafeZone technology.

Poole, UK, 2017-Jul-11

Under contract to Transport for London (TfL), the system operates with more than 120 Sicore
ANPR cameras at 80 sites on various key arterial corridors around the Capital including
the A40, A406, A2 and A316.

The system is part of a large scale upgrade and expansion of enforcement capabilities to
support TfL’s ‘Vision Zero’ approach to road safety which puts the elimination of road
danger at the heart of what they do.

According to Luke Normington, Head of Enforcement Solution at Siemens, the SafeZone
system is operating on some of the busiest roads in the UK. “The collaboration between
TfL and Siemens in the design phase of the project was of upmost importance to the
success of the project to ensure the system was deployed as efficiently and safely, with
minimal impact to the road-users, often meaning installation and commissioning being
carried out at night to minimise congestion effects. The design also considered the
maintenance and operation requirements, where Siemens holds the 10 year
maintenance contract for the system, to ensure it continues to operate with the highest
levels of availability 24/7/365” he said.

Lilli Matson, TfL’s Head of Strategy and Outcome Planning, said: “We are strongly
committed to reducing danger on London’s streets, especially that caused by drivers
exceeding the speed limit. Ensuring all drivers act responsibly is vitally important and
we’re using the latest Average Speed Camera technology, developed by Siemens, to do
so. Ensuring speed compliance along a more extensive length of road, rather than just
where a camera is located, can make a big difference in cutting the number of tragic
unacceptable collisions, saving more lives and improving air quality.”

Based on more than 30 years experience in vision detection and analytics and to build
further on the company’s success in the enforcement market, Siemens launched Sicore ll this year, its next generation ANPR camera platform.

Robust, reliable and built to last, Sicore ll has been purposefully designed for average
speed control and enforcement, low emission or clean air zones and access
control. With the demand for sophisticated enforcement solutions increasing year by
year, it represents a significant step change in performance from traditional ANPR
cameras.

According to James Riley, Siemens global product marketing manager for Enforcement
Solutions, Sicore ll is designed with future-proof features for the evolving ANPR market
and represents the future of enforcement supporting many countries across the world.
“The new Sicore ll platform is modular and scalable delivering the highest-quality,
evidentially-secure images in all conditions both day and night, and features a powerful
quad core processor and integrated state-of-the-art ANPR vision engine”, he said.

Sicore II has a compact, modern and distinctive design. Integrated antennas support
multiple communications options, including H.264 streaming for true multi-use ANPR
without interruption and dedicated Wi-Fi connectivity for secure and simple
commissioning. In addition, the in-built Virtual Private Network (VPN) facilitates safe
remote connection and delivers the highest levels of evidence data security.
