Siemens has announced the successful completion of the Griffin wind power farm, located approximately 19 miles northwest of Perth in the Scottish Highlands. The wind power farm has a capacity of 156 MW and is expected to generate enough power to supply over 80,000 homes.
Siemens Wind Power delivered, installed, and commissioned 68 of Siemens 2.3-MW turbines. Of the 68 turbines, 61 have a 101m rotor and 7 have a 93m rotor. This is the first time that a SWT-2.3-101 has been deployed in the UK. The wind farm is operated by SSE and service and maintenance responsibility will now pass to Siemens Energy Service Renewables. Siemens’ Availability & Maintenance contract will be for five years and create at least 14 locally based technician and supervisory roles.

Siemens is working with SSE Renewables on a number of wind farm projects in Scotland. In autumn 2009, Siemens and SSE Renewables signed a contract for the supply of wind turbines for the 350 MW Clyde wind farm project, which will also be commissioned this year.

Siemens is also heavily engaged in skills and training to support the development of the wind power sector in Scotland and throughout the UK. In 2010 Siemens announced its involvement with Carnegie College, Rosyth as part of the first pilot Wind Turbine Service Technician apprenticeship programme. This pioneering initiative is designed to provide the renewable energy industry with the highly skilled workers who are crucial to the sector’s skills requirements. The scheme has been a huge success and tripled its intake in 2011.
