Siemens Communications wins Queen’s Award for Enterprise - Innovation 2006

Company spearheads flexible working for HM Government

United Kingdom, 2006-Apr-21

Siemens Communications has received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for its innovative solution to enable flexible working for more than 110,000 users in HM Government departments.

The Award recognises Siemens Communications’ key contribution to helping HM Government to deliver against the efficiencies detailed in the Lyons Review (a review of public sector relocation strategy) and Gershon Report (a review of public sector efficiency).

The Queen’s Award for Enterprise is the UK’s most high profile award for business. Siemens Communications’ HiPath personal communications portal was developed as an enhancement to the Managed Telephony Service (Mts) contract delivered through OGCbuying.solutions in partnership with Global Crossing. It enables users within HM Government to communicate consistently and seamlessly using all forms of telephony including private networks, landline phones, mobile phones, the internet and new emerging wireless services.

This means that users can control their availability to take calls or have calls re-routed to the most convenient device, without the user or caller being aware of any difference in operation or functionality. The result is that flexible working practices can easily be deployed, meaning that travelling costs can be reduced, there is a reduced cost of infrastructure (including office space) and non-core functions can be more easily deployed out of high cost conurbations.

“To win the Queen’s Award for Enterprise is a huge honour for Siemens Communications and testament to the company’s innovative approach to solving complex communications issues in line with business requirements,” says Graham Walker, UK Managing Director of Siemens Communications.

“The development of the HiPath personal communications portal is a clear realisation of Siemens Communications’ LifeWorks vision, which removes the barriers between home and corporate communications to deliver a seamless experience regardless of location, network or device.”

Hugh Barrett, Chief Executive at OGCbuying.solutions, said: “We are delighted that Siemens Communications has won this award. By implementing this solution we have been able to introduce the concept of total mobility, at the press of a button, for all of our 110,000 Mts users.

"Working with Siemens has provided us with a technology partner that understands the dynamic requirements of a modern flexible civil service. Siemens has demonstrated it is able to adopt and design solutions that can match our business requirements. This includes the need to drive down operating costs; all of which has to be delivered without disruption to a key government service used 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”

The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are presented every year to UK businesses that have demonstrated outstanding achievement in one of three categories: international trade, sustainable development and innovation. The awards are given on the recommendation of the Prime Minister, who is assisted by an Advisory Committee that includes representatives of Government, industry and commerce, and the trade unions. Siemens Communications is entitled to the award until 2011.
