Siemens clocks up landmark safety record

Siemens Logistics and Airport Solutions has successfully completed one million man hours worked without a reportable incident or lost time injury in almost 2 years. The impressive 23-month safety record was achieved last month with just under 200 operatives and contractors working on all of the company’s current installations and maintenance activities including projects for both its aviation and postal services customers.

According to HSQE Business Manager, Paul King at Siemens, everyone in the company should be proud of this achievement. ‘This landmark clearly demonstrates to all our stakeholders that a proactive approach to health and safety is helping to deliver performance and service of the highest standard. The company’s innovative Zero Harm programme is central to the Siemens way of doing things – avoiding significant injury or loss – and individuals’ positive attitude to safety habits also plays a significant part in embedding the right culture into the business, he said.

In addition to the completion of new baggage handling facilities at Heathrow’s Terminal 4 last month and the installation of new IT systems, the company’s current operational activities include steel erection to a range of electrical, mechanical and IT installations and maintenance at both Heathrow and Gatwick airports, and IT maintenance and postal services support for Royal Mail at the Heathrow Worldwide Distribution Centre, Langley.

In partnership with Logan Teleflex, one of the world’s largest materials handling companies, Siemens reached 450,000 man hours working on the North Terminal Baggage handling project at Gatwick airport without a single (RIDDOR*) lost time injury or accident in over two years which helped Siemens achieve the million hour milestone.

The safety achievement was acknowledged by members of the Gatwick Construction Team with the presentation of a special award to the Logan Siemens Consortium. Head of Piers, Infrastructure & Airfield Projects at Gatwick, Ben Green said: ‘the prolonged safety record is testament to the consortium’s joint approach to safe working practises within the complex operational airport environment together with the focus and dedication of each and every member of the project team.’ New sorting equipment and facilities at the North Terminal, recently extended for airport operator Gatwick Airport Limited, on schedule, are now capable of processing baggage for reclaim for up to 500 passengers in a single operation.

The company’s activities have taken a significant upturn recently, providing UK-based operators of leading international transport hubs and regional airports with operational, service and technical support and in turn, the number of employees at the company has also increased significantly to more than 180.

  • RIDDOR - Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995
  • Health and Safety Executive RIDDOR requires employers, the self-employed and people in control of work premises to report serious workplace accidents, occupational diseases and specified dangerous occurrences (near misses).
