Siemens, a major employer in the UK and in the North East, is always looking for new ways to inspire young people to choose careers in science and technology.
As part of a three-year sponsorship of the Science Museum in London, the firm is bringing a team of two ‘science explainers’ from the Science Museum Outreach Team to schools in Newcastle and Gateshead this week.
The science experts are planning to put on highly interactive and inspirational shows at The Longbenton Community College in Newcastle on 17 January and at Thomas Hepburn School in Gateshead on 18 January. About 200 children from Key Stage 3 (aged 11- 13 years) will attend the shows.
There will also be an evening event for Siemens employees and their children held at the Science Maze at the Discovery Museum, in Newcastle.
During the shows, which are linked to the National Curriculum, the basic principles of materials science will be explained and demonstrated in a highly entertaining way – focusing on the properties of solids, liquids and gases. The experiments involve audience participation, plenty of shocks and surprises, water, slime and even some green goo.
Siemens in Newcastle has good relations with the schools in the community and works hard to support education initiatives particularly promoting science. Arts & Business provided a grant to help fund these science shows as part of a series Siemens is running at twelve schools around the UK.
