Siemens awarded Carbon Trust Standard

UK company receives recognition for ongoing commitment to emission reductions

Siemens plc has become one of less than 100 companies in the UK to receive the coveted Carbon Trust Standard. The award recognises the work the company has undertaken to reduce its carbon footprint by five per cent year on year since 2008 and demonstrates its genuine commitment to ongoing emission reductions.

Some of the projects that have enabled Siemens to get the Carbon Trust Standard include incentivising employees to choose low carbon cars and the introduction of energy saving technologies - some of which are Siemens own technology – during building refurbishments, including lighting, heating and building management.

“The accreditation shows that we are at the forefront when it comes to tackling climate change and have taken action ourselves by reducing the carbon emissions that we are directly responsible for, rather than just paying others to off-set our emissions,” says Andreas J. Goss, Chief Executive of Siemens plc. “The Carbon Trust Standard requires us to keep reducing our carbon footprint and to recertify every two years, so we’ll continue to build on the great work done so far and keep reducing our impact on the environment.”

Last year, by reducing travel, using web cam meeting technology and through energy saving refurbishments, Siemens managed an 8% energy reduction and ‘Energy Health Checks’ have identified future opportunities to help achieve at least the same target this year.

Going forward, Siemens intends to fund energy saving projects on its sites to a value in excess of £5 million using Siemens technology and innovation. Work includes lighting, sub metering, boiler optimisation and many other projects. The first phase of projects are being carried out at Siemens’ Oxford, Newcastle, Lincoln, Congleton and Wythenshawe sites. Siemens meters and systems will be used to collect and analyse the data gathered.
