Siemens adds new features to intersection traffic controller

With the launch of the sixth generation ST950 intersection controller at Traffex in 2013, Siemens introduced a host of new features and new levels of controller accessibility and safety. Integral UTMC OTU, 4-stream MOVA 7, LRT functionality, Pelican, Puffin and Toucan control, easy to follow, web-style browser user interfaces and greater flexibility were just some of the ST950 highlights.

According to the company’s Head of Product Management, Keith Manston, there are now even more ways to interact with the latest release of the ST950 helping optimise its on-street performance and the setting up of detection, for example.

‘The most striking new feature is the audible interface which enables the ST950 to talk to users. Uniquely, the ST950 can now provide audible feedback, in the form of spoken phrases, via a plug-in Bluetooth dongle to maintenance engineers on site. Utilising a mobile phone or other device capable of establishing a Bluetooth link with the controller, engineers may, for example, select a detector input to monitor, move to the location of that detector and ‘listen’ to its actual status in real time. The controller will ‘talk’ to the engineer via the Bluetooth link and advise when the loop input is active, enabling the engineer to focus on observing vehicles moving over the loop rather than trying to view the traffic and data on a terminal device at the same time’ he said.

In addition, the new ST950 now allows changing controller parameters to be displayed visually as a time-based graph aiding with the effective diagnosis of intermittent or infrequent events. Full synoptic maps can also be presented in the controller’s web browser to further aid diagnosis of on-street problems.
