Siemens acquires network planning specialist

PTI addition will strengthen power transmission and distribution service offering

United Kingdom, 2005-Jan-11

Siemens Power Transmission and Distribution (PTD) has acquired the business activities of US company Shaw Power Technologies Inc and Shaw Power Technologies International Ltd in the UK, commonly known as PTI.

PTI employs 10 network planning specialists in the UK, who will transfer from Knutsford, Cheshire, to Siemens’ offices in Manchester. Globally PTI has over 80 network planning specialists, most of whom are located in the US, as well as key partners in high growth regions such as Malaysia and China.

Headquartered in Schenectady, New York, PTI is the global leader in network planning software and engineering studies. The company’s PSS/E (Power System Simulator for Engineering) software is widely used by power networks experts throughout the world.

The acquisition represents an important extension of Siemens PTD’s service portfolio in the US market, where PTI’s PSS/E software has been selected by many leading utilities as well as government agencies.

“PTI complements Siemens’ existing service business by enabling us now to offer a complete portfolio of both transmission and distribution network planning”, said Dr Donald Weir, Service Division President of Siemens Power Transmission and Distribution.

“Recent events such as blackouts have increased the pressure to improve reliability. Network design and consulting is an essential part of determining where investments will be made.
