Second Time Lucky for Local Lad

"You're Hired" notice for 18 young apprenctices

Newcastle, 2009-Jul-31

Seventeen year-old Ben Jennings has secured a coveted apprentice place with engineering experts Siemens – after missing out on a previous scheme because his acceptance letter was delivered three months late.

Ben, who hails from Gateshead in the North East, had previously applied to another apprentice scheme and been accepted, but his offer letter went astray in the post and did not arrive for over three months. When a local paper published his dilemma, Siemens Apprenticeship Coordinator Joanne Dixon obtained Ben’s contact details and invited him to apply for Siemens’ 2009 apprentice intake. Ben was successful and is now one of 18 young people who will be joining Siemens, based at the company’s Shields Road facility in Newcastle upon Tyne, from September.

Ben and his colleagues visited their future workplace last Friday for their induction to the apprentice programme. In addition to meeting Joanne, the new recruits received a tour of the works and met senior Siemens’ managers before being taken to enroll for their related courses at Tyne Metropolitan College.

Mike Jones, HR Director for the Energy Sector UK, commented: “It’s a great feeling to be able to say ‘you’re hired’ to a significant number of local youngsters. I am particularly pleased that Siemens, thanks to the sharp eyes of our Apprenticeship Coordinator Joanne Dixon, is able to help Ben achieve his dream.”

“I’m looking forward to meeting each of the new recruits personally in due course. We are committed to developing talent and there are outstanding opportunities for career-minded youngsters to achieve their goals and achieve real job satisfaction as a Siemens employee.”

The 2009 intake for Siemens Energy Service Fossil comprises 14 mechanical and four electrical apprentices. Each apprentice will take part in a 3-4 year structured programme before completing their apprenticeship framework. The apprentices will join Siemens’ 18,000-strong workforce, based in over 100 locations, across the UK. Siemens has employed in excess of 130 apprentices country-wide this year.
