Scunthorpe MP visits Goole Rail Village as catalyst for Northern growth

  • Sir Nic Dakin MP visits the Goole site, where the company is investing up to £240 million
  • The facility is set to create up to 1,000 new jobs and around 1,700 supply chain positions, significantly boosting the Yorkshire and Lincolnshire economy
  • Revolutionary battery bi-mode technology from the site is poised to save UK railways £3.5 billion over 35 years, contributing to sustainable transport and economic efficiency

Siemens Mobility's Rail Village in Goole, East Yorkshire, welcomed Scunthorpe MP Sir Nic Dakin for a tour of its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. The visit highlighted how the site's positive impact on the local supply chain and skills development are creating opportunities across the wider Yorkshire and Humber region, including Scunthorpe.

Sir Nic Dakin, Member of Parliament for Scunthorpe, said:

"This impressive facility demonstrates the strength of the manufacturing capabilities we have in East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire. With around 1,700 supply chain jobs being created, this investment isn't just about Goole – it's about creating opportunities and boosting economic growth in the wider region and I was delighted to see the scale of Siemens Mobility’s investment up close."

During the tour, Sir Nic saw how regional businesses could benefit from the facility's expanding supply chain network. He met with some of the site's more than 40 apprentices and learned about training initiatives that could provide career pathways for young people from Scunthorpe and surrounding areas. The Scunthorpe MP was particularly impressed by the site's pioneering supported internship programme, which offers opportunities for young people with special educational needs and disabilities to enter the workforce - a model that could be replicated across the region. Of particular interest were the site's plans to assemble innovative battery bi-mode trains, which have the potential to eliminate the need for new diesel passenger trains, save Britain £3.5 billion and reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 12 million tonnes over 35 years.

Mark Speed, General Manager of Siemens Mobility’s Goole Rail Village, said:

"Our Goole facility represents how we will transform rail travel and transport in the UK, but equally important is how we transform lives through skills development and employment opportunities. Our commitment extends beyond Goole to communities like Scunthorpe, where we're actively seeking supply chain partners and creating pathways into rail engineering careers.

“From our Primary Engineer programme inspiring schoolchildren to our Women in Manufacturing events, we're building a skills pipeline that will benefit the entire region."

The Rail Village includes a train manufacturing facility, components facility, logistics, and bogie assembly. As the site prepares to deliver the next generation of Piccadilly line trains, it continues to strengthen its ties with neighbouring communities, ensuring the economic benefits of this major investment are felt across in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, including Scunthorpe.
