ScottishPower partners with Siemens for significant 3-year smart meter roll-out

ScottishPower, the first integrated energy company in the UK to generate 100% green electricity, has partnered with Siemens Managed Applications and Services (MAS), the nationally-accredited meter operator arm of the global technology company, to install smart meters across its 450,000-strong customer base in northern England.

Covering the North-West, North-East and Yorkshire, the project, negotiated without face-to-face meetings due to Covid-19 restrictions, will see smart meter installations begin in August.

Andrew Gore, Head of Sales for Retail in Siemens MAS, said “We are delighted to be working with ScottishPower on smart MOP deployment and have teams in place ready to install the smart meters, following rigorous safety protocols. MAS has worked in this space, supporting suppliers’ domestic and commercial customers, for over twenty-five years, we’re well-placed to deliver on ScottishPower’s smart meter targets. We look forward to working together to provide a fully integrated service to their customers. Health and Safety is at the core of both companies’ ethos and working in partnership to deliver the Ofgem targets with safety at the heart of our culture and processes was one of the main factors in working together.”

The government-regulated smart meter roll out is now 45% through installations, bringing an end to estimated billing and providing customers with visibility of gas and electricity usage in their properties, plus bringing the opportunity for a number of Behind the Meter (BtM) products to help consumers control and reduce their energy spend.

Paul Carman, UK Smart Metering – Head of Deployment at ScottishPower explains “Our choice of the right partner was a key business decision and the result of a rigorous tendering process. We were impressed with Siemens’s in-depth portfolio, knowledge and experience, which they used to answer our questions quickly and in detail, as well as to challenge and refine some of the tendering elements.

“Their proven ability to work at scale and their record of delivering quality customer service in the domestic environment, for which they have an average customer rating of nine out of ten, were also factors. They will be supporting us to bring the benefits of smart meters to our domestic customers in the North.”

ScottishPower supplies energy to over five million households and businesses and is part of the Iberdrola Group, one of the world’s largest integrated utility companies and a world leader in wind energy. Siemens is an accredited meter operator, data collector and aggregator; operating the country’s gas pre-payment infrastructure, which serves millions of households across Great Britain, and offers a portfolio of services alongside Meter deployment including half-hourly settlement and the Managed Credit smart prepayment solution.

Andrew Gore adds “The MAS business provides a range of metering and data solutions at scale, helping energy suppliers to offer innovative new tariffs and manage the risk of bad debt though smart prepayment solutions, whilst meeting key regulatory time frames for smart metering and half hourly settlement.”
