United Kingdom, 2005-May-23
Showcasing its ground-breaking technological solutions, Roke Manor Research, the Siemens-owned research and development centre, is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a special technology day at its facility in Romsey, Hampshire.
The focal point of the celebrations is a series of innovative product demonstrations, highlighting cutting-edge developments in a range of areas from radio frequency identification (RFID) to telemedicine, and from sound recording to intelligent video monitoring.
One demonstration features the Universal Microphone, which allows sound to be faithfully recorded, even when the device is distant from the source. The solution’s ability to pinpoint the origins of sound and separate these from background noise makes it ideal for sports outside broadcasts and open air concerts.
Another presentation shows how RFID is being used to track assets in the retail and public sector, to monitor the assembly of automotive components and to prevent the sale of counterfeit drugs in the pharmaceutical industry.
Paul Stein, Roke’s managing director, said: “Over the past 50 years, Roke has led the development of pioneering products in areas ranging from wireless solutions to networking systems and electronic sensors. Today’s event celebrates this heritage and gives an insight into how our innovations will shape technology over the next half-century.”
Alan Wood, chief executive, Siemens plc, said: “Innovation has always been the lifeblood of Siemens and the world-class expertise of our people has made Roke a highly valued part of Siemens in the UK. “
“It is innovation, not just in developing products but in transforming our customers’ businesses and driving their success, that has enabled us to continue to attract such highly skilled people and contribute to UK competitiveness and the economy,” said Wood.
His Royal Highness The Duke of York and local dignitaries including Mary Fagan, the Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire and The Mayor of Test Valley, are all attending the Roke anniversary.
