Pioneering wind farm off the Suffolk coast opened officially by UK Energy Minister

The Greater Gabbard Offshore Wind Farm located off the Suffolk Coast has today (Wednesday, 7 August) been opened officially by the UK’s Energy Minister Michael Fallon MP. Greater Gabbard will generate up to 500MW (megawatt) of clean electricity for homes in the region.

Frimley, 2013-Aug-07

Greater Gabbard has been a pioneer in innovation, including integrating the use of helicopters into day-to-day operations and the use of a Service Operating Vessel (SOV).

The Energy Minister opened the wind farm together with local political, business and community representatives and senior executives from SSE and RWE npower renewables.

Siemens plays an important role in Greater Gabbard and has supplied, installed and commissioned 140 3.6MW turbines, which have been exporting clean electricity to the National Grid since September 2012. Siemens designed and installed the grid connections consisting of two 33/132kV offshore substations (Inner Gabbard and Galloper) and an onshore substation at Leiston near Sizewell. Siemens also has a five year service and maintenance contract delivered through its 100 people strong team based at the Operations and Maintenance base in Lowestoft.

Siemens director for Service Renewables, Richard Luijendijk, said:

“As one of the largest offshore wind farms in the region, Greater Gabbard highlights the significance of the industry in creating new jobs and skills especially in long term operations and maintenance. Greater Gabbard has also been a pioneer in innovation, including integrating the use of helicopters into day-to-day operations and the use of a Service Operating Vessel (SOV).”
