United Kingdom, 2005-Apr-26
NEXT Group plc, the UK's leading retail and home shopping brand, has awarded Siemens Logistics and Assembly Systems a major contract to extend the logistics automation system at its Yorkshire distribution centre for boxed goods.
The order for Phase II of the project is part of the expansion programme for the facility and follows the order for the Phase I of the new NEXT Directory distribution centre which was placed in 2004. The second phase allows the expansion of the new site and the conversion of the existing distribution centre, which was provided by Siemens in 1998, to a purely retail operation.
The extension, which is the latest stage of a planned development programme, will integrate seamlessly with the existing Siemens system and support future growth within the NEXT business.
Phase I will be completed in October 2005 and Phase II in September 2006. The overall NEXT Directory site will comprise a high-bay warehouse with 486,000 storage locations for cartons operated by 30 storage & retrieval machines, an extensive case conveyor system, and item and parcel sorters. Siemens will also provide a new warehouse control system for both distribution centres, together with a visualisation system and the entire controls system.
NEXT has a group turnover for the year to January 2005 of £ 2,858m. The retail division operates over 380 stores in the UK and the NEXT Directory business has more than 1.9 million active customers.
Designed to provide accurate, efficient, next day delivery of clothing to NEXT retail outlets and the highly successful NEXT Directory mail order operation, the completed logistics automation system is a sophisticated solution that combines extremely high throughput with the capability to handle individual garments.
Siemens Logistics and Assembly Systems is based in Banbury and employs over 300 people, half of whom are involved in the service and support of systems supplied in the UK and Ireland.
The business has its headquarters in Nuremberg, Germany, and is the world's leading supplier of logistics and factory automation equipment. As a systems integrator, the group supplies the whole range of products and services, from individual products and systems right up to complete turnkey facilities as a general contractor.
It consists of five divisions: Distribution and Industry, Airport Logistics, Postal Automation, Electronics Assembly Systems and Customer Service. The company, with some 10,000 employees worldwide, has a business volume of around EUR 2.6 billion.
