Network Rail awards £50 million contract to Siemens

United Kingdom, 2005-May-24

Siemens Transportation Systems has been awarded a £50 million contract by Network Rail to provide replacement signalling, telecommunications and electrical supply works for the Portsmouth Area Infrastructure Project.

The project replaces signalling approaching the end of its life, improving safety and reliability, as well as availability and maintainability of the operational railway to the benefit of the area’s rail passengers and Network Rail.

Siemens Transportation Systems will design and build a new signalling system to support track remodelling and renewal work in the Portsmouth, Fratton and Havant areas, with signalling control extending to Emsworth, Petersfield and Fareham.

The system, scheduled to be effective from 2007 will be controlled from a new signalling centre at Havant using Siemens' VICOS control system, with safe operation provided by a Siemens SIMIS-W signalling interlocking system. As part of the integrated package of work Siemens will also provide AZSM axle counters for train detection and telephones operated by Siemens’ HiPath telephone concentrator system.

Kevin Tutton, managing director of Siemens Transportation Systems said: “ We are delighted to have secured this very important piece of work, which is testimony to our expertise in delivering, complex work packages across all aspects of rail engineering.

"This particular project will also be of significant benefit to help improve the journey experiences for the many thousands of rail passengers in the Portsmouth area.”

The new signaling system is expected to be brought into use in 2007.

Notes to editors

The Portsmouth Area Infrastructure Project covers approximately 28 route miles. Siemens uses a containerised signalling system. This project will feature four, planned container sites controlling 131 main signals, 44 point ends and 262 axle counters. Three level crossings will be renewed and one recontrolled as part of the project.

The project utlises the technology first introduced into the UK, with the commissioning in to service of the Dorset Coast Resignalling Scheme in December 2003. It also builds on the successful contract work awarded to Siemens for the Southern Power Upgrade, covering the same area and which is scheduled for completion later this year.

Siemens Transportation Systems employs around 630 people in the UK, providing expertise in rail systems and technology to the UK rail industry.

With expertise in delivering rail infrastructure and rolling stock projects, Siemens provides rolling stock to SouthWest Trains, Heathrow Express, One Great Eastern and Northern Trains. New Siemens Trains have been ordered for the West Coast Mainline and Transpennine Express routes.
