Siemens Mobility welcomed Mayor Luke Campbell MBE to its Goole Rail Village, where he saw how the site is creating jobs, developing skills and building a strong local supply chain while delivering new Piccadilly line trains for London. The visit highlighted Siemens Mobility’s considerable investment of up to £240 million in East Yorkshire, its growing apprenticeship and early‑careers programmes, as well as the Rail Village’s expanding role in supporting future rail projects for the UK.
Luke Campbell MBE, Mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire, said:
It’s been brilliant to meet the teams at Siemens Mobility’s Goole Rail Village and see the work going into producing the new Piccadilly line trains. The jobs, apprenticeships and skills being developed on this site show the strength and potential of Hull and East Yorkshire.
What’s happening here isn’t just about manufacturing trains, it’s about creating opportunities for local people and building a future where our region plays a bigger role in the UK rail industry – especially with the potential of making next-generation battery trains that could deliver more efficient rail travel here in Goole.”
Across the UK and Ireland, the company has over 170 apprentices from Level 3 to Level 6 in engineering, manufacturing and operations. At Goole, apprentices are combining practical work on the Piccadilly line programme with studies through partners including York College, and many from the first 2020 intake have already moved into permanent roles, showing the development of long‑term skills in the region and opening career routes for local people.
Mark Speed, General Manager of Siemens Mobility’s Goole Rail Village, said:
“We were pleased to host Mayor Luke Campbell at the Goole Rail Village and demonstrate the scale of Siemens Mobility’s investment. Our teams, including apprentices and early‑careers colleagues, play an important role in supporting manufacturing and skills development in this region. The visit provided a useful opportunity to discuss how our operations contribute to employment across Hull, East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.”
The Goole Rail Village includes a train manufacturing facility, components facility, logistics centre, and a new bogie assembly and service centre now under construction each contributing to long‑term growth across the region. Goole currently produces 80% of Piccadilly line trains for Transport for London and also intends to produce battery bi‑mode trains to help modernise the UK network, reinforcing its role as a cornerstone for jobs and supply‑chain opportunities across Hull, East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.
